The Measure of a Man

It always interests me to read about the religious views and creeds that motivate the great political leaders and freedom fighters. This is an incredibly short book, I read it on the train up from Kent. With only two chapters it can fit in your back pocket.

This book reveals the basis for an entire life, it is simple but still profound as some of the most important things are. The book tackles a question that I have been considering for some time now, the nature of man, is he (or she) essentially a beautiful butterfly or merely an animal acting and reacting to the most base of desires.

It is a question that has far reaching implications as to the way we should live our lives, the reasons for sin and evil. I think it is probably as important as our questions as to the nature of God, of course the two act on each other.

I won’t reveal the whole book you should read it, in short Dr King proposes that we are neither completely good or animal in our nature. He asserts a spiritual essence to man, but also a dualism, he speaks of the the inner battles that rage between good and evil. He also talks about the way to live life, a three pronged approach, we must love ourselves, love others and love God. If any of the three is missing we are diminished
